Brooklyn Crescents Statistics and History
The Brooklyn Crescents were a Minor Professional hockey team based in Brooklyn, NY playing in the Eastern Hockey League from 1943 to 1944. They played at the Brooklyn Ice Palace, and took their name after the historical Crescent Athletic Club, which was no longer operating.
The Crescents entered the EHL on December 5, 1943 - after the first third of the season had been played - replacing the New Haven Eagles, which had just withdrawn. The league engineered the team, knowing that without a fourth team, the circuit would not survive. The Crescents were awarded players from the three remaining EHL teams, with most coming from the Boston Olympics and the New York Rovers. This did not make the players happy, since it lessened their chances of being called up to the NHL.
The Crescents opened their schedule in Boston against the Boston Olympics. Their starting goalie was scheduled to have been Don Murray from the Rovers, however he telegraphed that he was ill, so Tom Moon, an ex-goalie who served as goal judge at the Boston Garden, was pressed into service. The Crescents lost, 6-1.
