Long Island Ducks Statistics and History
The Long Island Ducks were a hockey team that played in the Eastern Hockey League from 1961 to 1973. The team was technically classified as amateur, however the players were high caliber and were recruited from Canada to play hockey, and were paid for their services.
In their final season, the owner of the Ducks, Al Baron, threatened to pull his team out of the Walker Cup Playoffs due to a dispute with his players over contractual bonus provisions. The dispute was settled, however the Ducks played the home games of the opening round of the playoffs in the same arena as their opponents, the Cape Cod Cubs. Plans were made to continue to base the team in Yarmouth, Massachusetts and to rename the team the Massachusetts Ducks if they advanced past the first round, however the Cape Cod Cubs won the series four games to zero. Even before the playoffs had begun, Baron announced that the team would be going out of business following the season.
When the EHL disbanded and the NAHL formed in its place, the Ducks were not one of the teams to make the transition to the new league.
