Oakland/Spokane Clippers Statistics and History

The Oakland/Spokane Clippers were a minor professional hockey team that competed in the Pacific Coast Hockey League. The team was named after the Pan-American Airlines "Flying Clipper Ship" style aircraft that was popular in the 1930s.

The Clippers, owned by Arthur C. Rud, were initially admitted to the then-Northwestern Hockey League in October 1936 as the Spokane Indians, replacing the Calgary and Edmonton teams which had dropped out. However, shortly thereafter the team relocated to Oakland and adopted the name Clippers, prompting the league to change its name to the Pacific Coast Hockey League to better represent its expanded geographical scope, as well as its desire to expand into California.

In early February, the team faced travel disruptions due to a snowstorm in California, leading to the postponement of two away games. Following some adjustments to the schedule, the Clippers played a "home" game in Portland on February 7. On February 8, the Clippers announced their decision to move to Spokane, citing an inadequate arena, high travel expenses, and poor attendance in Oakland. Theypostponed a scheduled game on February 8, and finally resumed play on February 14 in Spokane. However, they only played 3 games in Spokane, with their final 2 regular season games played in Portland, and then all playoff games played in Vancouver.

During their time in Oakland, the team played at the Oakland Ice Rink, a building criticized for its numerous columns that obstructed the view of spectators. In Spokane, they played at the Spokane Arena, an open-air rink.
