Spokane Spokes Statistics and History
The Spokane Spokes were a minor professional hockey team based in Spokane Washington, playing in the 1958-59 season of the Western Hockey League. The owners of the team had operated the Spokane Flyers in the senior Western International Hockey League for several seasons before moving on to professional hockey with the WHL. Since the WHL already had a team named the Edmonton Flyers, the Spokane team was supposed to change their name to something else as a requirement for admission to the league.
However the team did not rename themselves. They played with their old uniforms and referred to themselves as the Flyers, and the Spokane press followed suit. This caused a dispute with the Edmonton Flyers which demanded that the team follow through on their promise. The other teams in the league referred to them as the Spokane Spokes, and the press in those cities followed suit.
Following the 1958-59 season the team renamed itself the Comets.
