Wichita Skyhawks Statistics and History
The Wichita Skyhawks were a Minor Professional hockey team based in Wichita, Kansas playing in the American Hockey Association from 1935 to 1940. The team played in the Alaskan Ice Palace in Wichita, located on South Hydraulic Street.
The Skyhawks were owned by Mrs. Ella B. Wible. Wible owned the Wichita Ice Delivery Company with her husband, and in 1935, they built the Alaskan Ice Palace as a business venture to compliment the seasonal nature of the ice delivery business. They were awarded an AHA franchise in November 1935.
In early 1940, the Skyhawks experienced financial difficulty. The team was subsequently sued by several former players for back pay, an the IRS attached the gate receipts for failure to pay admission taxes. Mrs. Wible attempted to sell the team to a group of Wichita businessmen, but the deal fell through on February 24, 1940. Two days later, on February 26, the AHA member teams met and revoked Wichita's franchise, and rescheduled all remaining home games as road games.
