John (Junior) Hanna passes away at 70
Former NHL player John (Junior) Hanna lost his long battle with cancer on Sunday. He died peacefully at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital at the age of 70.
The Sydney native was a hockey star back in the 1960’s and ’70’s, spending six seasons in the NHL with the New York Rangers, Montreal Canadiens and Philadelphia Flyers. He also played for the Cleveland Crusaders of the WHA.
His playing career ended prematurely when he suffered a badly broken leg in 1973. He went on to coach in the American Hockey League.
He recorded six goals, 26 assists and 206 penalty minutes in the NHL as a hard-hitting defenceman.
He was inducted into the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame in 1980.
There will be a mass at St. Joseph’s church on Wednesday at 10 a.m. to celebrate his life.
