As a casual fan, I always felt that the accomplishments of the 1960 Olympic hockey team was far more impressive than the 1980 team.

1980 got all the ink and rightfully so because of television and the era that it was played in. In 1960 the roster were true amateurs in every sense of the word. Frankly, I think it was the original miracle on ice. It may have been mentioned in sports journals and periodicals over the years, but the 1960 victories were truly of olympic proportions.

I was 16 at the time and watched the title game at Sun Valley on a grainy feed, I believe from CBS. I was familiar with hockey back then having grown up in Boston and following Harvard hockey with my dad. Having 4 Harvard guys on the squad was just so incongruous but the Cleary boys, Ed Owen, and Bobby McVey, were well-deserving of their place on the squad.

Olympic games are a sham now; it's all about money and advertising. They long ago lost the true meaning of the word amateurism. God love the late tyrant Avery Brundage! Things ain't what they used to be.
