lou holmes does not sign anymore.

you will get a letter from one of his children stating that he doesn't sign and not to ask for his autograph again and they will keep your items.

thats really too bad about juzda he added a nice letter with my last request. as for bourcier i sent out my request... no answer and the phone number listed for the address is not in service. as far as i know there have been no successes with him from this site. (the addy was in harveys 06 list i think.)

Tony Bukovich is still alive. He lives in Largo, FL, with his daughter. Most sources say he was born in 1916 or 1917, but his daughter said he had celebrated his 90th birthday in 2005.

Goalie Connie Dion from Asbestos, Que, should also be alive. He will be 90 later this year.

And don't forget Red Carr, he's 91, but I think too ill to sign (like Hank Goldup).

do you have an address for connie dion(probably the oldest living goaltender) or tony bukvich?

I have had request out for the past six months no response. as far as i know that address doesn't work the number listed for that address is not in service. But if you do try, try addressing it to Mario Boucier as he is the owner of the residence (or was) maybe he can tell you more and/or pass on your letter. Good Luck!!

Thanks Dennel.

Apologies if these names have already been discussed, but I came across a few more names:

Tom Cook
Bert Connelly
Ron Lyons
Jack Crawford

The first three, however, are all older than Bourcier (or at least, I assume so, even though I couldn't find a birth date for Lyons) so I assume that they're deceased - but I couldn't find dates of death on this site, LostHockey or Find-A-Grave, so I thought I'd bring them up.

I'm slowly working on cleaning up Wikipedia's coverage of hockey players (someone's been going around creating articles for players without listing their dates of death), so if I come across any more, I'll let you all know.

lafleurfan10
March 17th, 2008, 07:44 PM
Tom Cook is most likely deceased as he would be over 100 years old if still alive.
Bert Connelly is deceased
Ron Lyons no DOD found he was probably born around 1910
Jack Crawford died in 1977
Thanx for the input!

Interesting! I'll try and find a DOD for Cook and Connelly for Wikipedia.

Finally found some information on Ron Lyons:

I bought myself a copy of the 07/08 NHL record book and found something amazing.

Len Grosvenor, PLayed for: Ottawa senators, Montreal Maroons, New York Americans. He is not listed as deceased!!!! he was born in 1903!! meaning if he is actually alive and this was not printed as a typo, he is the oldest living NHLer and he is the last living member of the Montreal Maroons and the Ottawa Senators. also listed below are names of other non deceased NYA players as listed by the 07/08 NHL Official Guide and Record Book.

Bill Benson
Murray Armstrong
Hal Picketts
Percy Jackson (goalie)

I bought myself a copy of the 07/08 NHL record book and found something amazing.

Len Grosvenor, PLayed for: Ottawa senators, Montreal Maroons, New York Americans. He is not listed as deceased!!!! he was born in 1903!! meaning if he is actually alive and this was not printed as a typo, he is the oldest living NHLer and he is the last living member of the Montreal Maroons and the Ottawa Senators. also listed below are names of other non deceased NYA players as listed by the 07/08 NHL Official Guide and Record Book.

Johnny O'Flaherty
Bill Benson
Pat Egan
Murray Armstrong
Fred Hergerts
Allan Murray
Hal Picketts
Hub Wilson
Percy Jackson (goalie)

Has anyone got an address for Fred, Allan, Hal, Hub or Percy. I think the others are in past posts.

Good luck with the search but don't be surprised if most of those guys have passed on.Not being listed as deceased usually means that the nhl lost track of them years ago. There is a disclaimer in the book that states their info is incomplete. It's common to not know much about older players who didn't play very long. But you never know!

Dennel said it right, the NHL Guide & Record Book can only reflect what readers and researchers let them know about deceased players.
There are many more players like Al Huggins, Jack Howard, Charles Stewart (Born 1895!!!) who are not marked as deceased but definitely no more alive.

I have the following death dates:

Fred Hergerts: 07/15/1998
Allan Murray: 1982
Hub Wilson: 07/15/1999

Tom Coulter (Art's brother) was removed from the Guide's retired player register several years ago, but I don't know why.
He died December 17, 2003, at the age of 92.

I've been searching for a death date of Len Grosvenor for years now, but I couldn't find anything on him.

I see that now, but i think it is possible Grosvenor is still alive, he played over 100 games in the NHL i find it hard to believe someone wouldn't mention it in his obituary. anyway later ill post a list of living players from 1944 and back according to the guide.

dennel

Grosvenor would be almost 103 years old.(This database says July 1905).And I think I remember hearing that there were no original Ottawa Senators left alive.I believe it was during a Senators game on CBC a couple years ago, must have been during the playoffs.

I bought last years NHL guide and I use it to check off the players that I have/receive autos from.I currently have almost 1200 different players, mostly on index cards, photos or in media guides.About 90% of them played pre-1990.Around 5000 total hockey autos.
Also use the list to keep track of guys who pass away so I don't send to them. It's an invaluable resource!

That reporting is very clearly wrong, isn't it? I can see them passing over Jean Bourcier, since he hasn't been in contact for some time now, but it's fairly easy to verify that Louis Holmes and especially Al Suomi are still alive, even if Holmes won't reply himself. I wonder if sending a correction to the London Free Press would accomplish anything?

GREAT WORK !! I could care less about the cards or the $200.00, More importantly ,I see it only fare to advise the honest members of the forum as to the situation ..Thank You LF10 will keep uyou updated ..Regards Kevin

I've received answers from Murray Armstrong, Jud McAtee, Ed Barry, Norm McAtee and Bill Chadwick. Also received an answer from Pat Egan that was postmarked a day after he passed so I'm not sure it's real. I was going to scan it and send the scan to canadienhorses but I discovered my scanner is no longer compatible with my new computer which runs Windows Vista. I'll keep trying. I've got things out for the following: Lude Check, Oscar Aubuchon, Johnny Mahaffey, Pete Langelle, Tod Campeau, Wally Stanowski and Bill Berry. I keep everyone posted if anyone cares.

Somewhat inspired by Wikipedia's page on the oldest living Major League Baseball players (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_oldest_living_Major_League_Baseball_player s), I thought that it would be a worthy endeavor to do the same for the oldest living National League Hockey players.

I've composed my first draft (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Canadian_Paul/Hockey), including only players who are 90+. Once I get it all properly referenced, I'd like to bring it live and make it a real article on Wikipedia.

If anyone notices any major mistakes (omissions, deceased people listed as living, living or deceased people listed as possibly living etc. etc.), please let me know, as it would be most helpful in creating an accurate article in the end.

For the record, for the remainder of the 1918 updates I have:
John Mahaffy and Hank Goldup for "living"
Connie Dion, Stu Smith and Lorrain Thibeault for "possibly living"

The only other "non-player" I found approaching 90 in the next two years is Jack Butterfield.

Also, on a completely irrelevant tangent, does anyone know where I can find a picture of Lou Holmes?

Last summer I stopped in to meet Coach Armstrong and have him sign a few graphs. He was awesome having just come in from the golf course. He invited me and my daughter into his study where he fielded a call from his retired son and then signed my things. We looked at the photos on his walls and he narrated a few of them. He then related that he is the oldest living former Maple Leaf. He's got a pretty decent signature considering his age. Oddly, he lives on the northeast coast of Florida while most retired NHL guys live south or on the gulf coast in the Tampa area.

I've had one out to Bill Benson since June 26 with no reply. As for Murray Armstrong, my response from him came with a nice little note that spoke about his golfing three times a week and mentioned that his wife of 66 years (can you imagine that?!?) still golfs once a week herself. I envy you for having the opportunity to sit and talk with him. It's great to hear old-timers sit and talk about the glory days!

i have one out to bill benson as well. No joy as of yet. From what i have heard the northern part of Florida provides cooler golfing weather especially for seniors. Murray signed two of two for me as well and included a small note to tell me he is still active on the golf course and that he was the oldest NHL'er who did something, i forget what. Quite a character from all i can find out.

I've been wondering some of these questions myself and checking out this thread. First of all, great work, it really helps with my collection! Secondly, here are some comments myself:

Hal Picketts - is he alive? There are 2 Picketts in his hometown, one of which someone received an RTS from, but they could be just relatives.

George Abbott - from Ontario - there are 3 George Abbotts all within about 5 hours of his hometown of Sydenham, so anyone's guess there.

Gaston Leroux - from Montreal - again, 3 Gaston Leroux in Quebec.

Clint Smith - someone got him back a few months ago. Only one I've seen, so very very hit or miss through being ill I would assume?

Don Willson - has anyone tried or contacted the Thunder Bay addy?

Paul Gauthier - was born in Manitoba - there are 4 addys there... there is a Paul Gauthier that plays in the Senior league in Ste Anne. Perhaps it's his son??

Robert Kirkpatrick - who is this???

Ernie Laforce - Non-NHL'er??

Oscar Aubuchon - I read that he was deceased... ??

Stan Smith - Non-NHL'er??

Stuart Smith - born in Manitoba, there is a Stuart Smith in Winnipeg..

Lorrain Thibeault - Non-NHL'er??

Dave MacKay - Non-NHL'er??

John Adams - Non-NHL'er??

Bill Benson - what was the addy people sent to? were they received back yet??

Armand Gaudreault - there are 2 of him living in Quebec.... ??

Tony Licari - anyone receive him back? He is still alive and was signing through an Ontario address.

Tod Campeau - you should receive this back as someone got him a few months ago unless his health has changed.

I think that's it for some comments/questions I had. Hope I didn't repeat anyone or miss anyone. Just going by my list that's inconjunction with yours!!! :)

**EDIT** Forgot to add:

Pete Langelle - heard he was unable to sign

Alf Pike - received my items back a few months ago with a stamped "Alf Pike" on it. Obviously unable to sign anymore.

Keith Allen - still signing

Gaye Stewart - still signing

Bep Guildon - still signing

As far as I know, Gaudreault and Picketts are still alive; Untested addresses for both are: Armand Gaudreault; 263 Rue Caplet; Beauport, QC G1B 3L9; and Hal Picketts; 410 Miles Street: Asquith, SK S0K 0J0. Do the cities match your research? I've also begun to think about putting together a list of those men 80-85. There are actually quite a few and with some of the 85+ list passing recently, we've begun to see a lot of franchise history disappear with them.

I definately agree with you. I started thinking about it after I searched through the Missing Link set, then searched on here and low and behold found this thread. Thought I would attempt to contribute to help myself, and others.

That Gaudreault address is from Harvey, right? I reversed looked it up on Canada411 and it wasn't his name. The 2 addresses I have are from Canada411 with one in Alma and the other in Labelle. I believe in another thread 'lafleurfan10' has tried one of these addresses. Perhaps they can update us??

As for Picketts - wow if he is still alive!! There are 2 Picketts I found in Sask. - Jack and M & K - both Asquith, SK S0K 0J0. That's the extent of my Picketts research.

Has anyone tried any of these addresses???

That's crazy!! But good to know.. if he can sign at an in-store signing, you would think he'd be able to sign TTM? Anyone know what the scoop is with him then?? Why people haven't received him back..... ???

This is only speculation but at 95, I don't think opening, signing, and sending back mail is high on his priority list. He may even have problems doing that without the aid of more deft hands. As an example, if you collected football autographs in the late '80's and early '90's and wanted HOFer George Musso, it sometimes took months to get him back or just weeks/days. That's because I had a friend who called him and set up a time to visit with him to sign some larger pieces. When he got there, George showed him stacks of fan mail he just couldn't open and close any more. So my buddy went to his house every other month or so to help him sign and send back the requests that had accumulated. He did that up until George passed away. That's my take on the Smith situation.

Hmm.. well that's an interesting take for sure and while I thought of it, I never REALLY thought of it that way. Makes me wonder if I should send my item then... I just figured he wanted $$ or something to that affect. So, why then does he sign the odd one??

I just got an RTS from Hal's Sask address today, also waiting on Pike, Benson, Aubuchon and three out to Clint Smith. I got Tod Campeau back this week only took 14 days or so, also Gaye Stewart is a good and fast signer for me anyway.

Aubuchon- where did you read that he was deceased?
I believe i tried armand gaudreault at that address but it came back RTS
As for Benson, i have not had a response yet, will keep the board informed.
Willson - i tried him through an addy listed on this site and he said it wasn't him.

Thanks for the update on the Pickett's addresses. Would be nice to know if it is a relation and he is deceased, if they could at least state that.

As for Pike, would be interesting to see if you get his autograph, but I received a stamp, so you will probably receive the same.

Benson - I dunno there - waiting on you guys!!! :)

Aubuchon - not sure where I read it, will try to find the information for you. It's unconfirmed though.

Lastly, for Clint Smith, not sure what his scoop is, especially doing an autograph signing, but it could be as the person stated, and he just can't get to the mail these days.

Which Armand did you try, the Rue Caplet one? In Canada411 it's someone else, so you could phone or try the other 2 in the book?

lou holmes does not sign anymore.

you will get a letter from one of his children stating that he doesn't sign and not to ask for his autograph again and they will keep your items.

Did you receive something back that said this when you sent to Mr. Holmes? If so, when, and what address did you send it to?

Unfortunately, the update is not a good one. I've had Aubuchon, Langelle, Campeau and Benson all out for over a month with nothing back. Pike has been a couple of weeks and I'm still waiting. Could be the lag in the mail between Canada and the States or it could be they've either put the mail aside until it accumulates or they've stopped signing. I just saw a Howie Meeker return posted somewhere. He turns 85 very soon so why wait for him to hit the list. Get him now!

Thank you for the update - it's always nice to get them, whether it's any "action" or not.

Here's my update. I've sent to Mahaffy, Fillion, Stanowski, Henderson, Riopelle, Barry, Jud McAtee, Suomi, Blake, and Norm McAtee since July 18th.

I received my first one back in Jud McAtee (this one took 8 days - I live in Canada, but can send mail out every so often in the US and this was one of them). Just a note for anyone making customs with his birthdate. hockeydb is actually wrong and he was born on February 5, 1920, NOT May 2, 1920 (yes, I've e-mailed them about it).

So... so far, so good. :) Also, might have a lead on Holmes and Bukovich, will keep you posted.......

(Stanowski, Henderson, Barry received August 1st. N.McAtee received August 5th.)

bavarianmartl
August 2nd, 2008, 04:53 AM
I have made the experience that about 10% of the oldtimer's birth dates published on hockey sources are incorrect.
A lot of correct are finally unveiled when a player died and his obituary can be read.

Tony Bukovich's daughter said he was born in 1915, so you have three choices.
I believe in his daughter.......

I received the same letter in today's mail and I'm amazed once again at the kindness shown by the family members who are going through what they are going through with their loved ones. After saying she has tried twice to get her father to sign but he can't or won't and that he doesn't know his family or remember much of his hockey career, she ended the letter by saying she still reads every letter to him and that the caregivers at the home really enjoy them. Then, in a postscript, she writes, "Sorry to take so long to reply." It's time for those of us who wrote to her dad to drop her a line and say "thanks" to her and wish her the best as she cares for her father. Address is Donna Fordham; Box 793; Ste Rose, MB R0L 1S0.

He'll sign anything you send him and in his written response he'll ask for 5$ for his secretary that helps him answer his mail, he signed 2/3 for me ( he kept a photo that I had offered him) but he also sent two of his own signed mini cards, and a signed Molson export card, and a unsigned mini photo of Maurice Richard (not sure why) he also included a small signed note responding to my questions. For the Blake address go to the living pre-1945 players list and its listed there, I have not received him back but have sent a letter to him. I added him to the list because there was a success at that address earlier this year. as for Bathgate, only players 85 and up go on the list. having said that I think I'm missing a few.

I can post the list I have. So what is that, anyone born before 1923? Or 1924??

Ok, well I tried calling the number that was listed with his address again, actually got a reply, and after an awkward conversation found out the the people residing at this address are of no relation to Jean Bourcier, meaning that the address posted in Harvey 07 was incorrect, meaning Jean Bourcier is in no way confirmed to be alive and is hence removed from the list until proven otherwise. Names on my list must have an address or some form of contact confirming that they were alive as of 2007. If a report of a player being deceased is found, he will be removed from the list. Also now that i think of it he only said that he wasn't related to him not that he didn't know him, if anyone who can actually speak french wouldn't mind calling, maybe we'd get a better confirmation. This is the address that was listed in Harvey's list 07 + the matching phone # from whitepages.com. Good luck.

That must be him, no one else that played in the NHL had the name Jean Bourcier, the officially confirmed oldest living NHLer is Louis Holmes.

Connie Dion is still alive at 90, at least according to his tournament website:

http://www.ahmasbestos.com/tournoiconniedion/connie.htm

There's also an article about him attending a golf tournament at the age of 87 for some slightly outdated proof:

www.star-collector.net I highly recommend this site to all newcomers as it contains the addresses for almost any player listed here and also the name's you are looking for above, just follow the links to sports, then hockey. Good luck, and welcome to the hobby!

I don't know how hard you want to try but you could contact Gus Mortson. They were skating buddies. The last i knew they were still skating a couple of years ago. He should know what is happening with Pete.

Does anyone have the address and any updates with success or not for:

Clint Smith
Bill Benson
Al Suomi

And any other players who played in any games in the 1930s ? Is there an updated list of the oldest verified NHLers out there ? I found a few ex Toronto Maple Leaf players without a date given for their death if they died. Does anyone have any addresses for:

Norm Mann b.1914
Ross Johnstone b.1926
Red Carr b.1916
Jean Marois b.1924
Bill Ezinicki b.1924

There are a number of old time players without a date of death given when you search hockey-reference or even google searches.

Thanks !

Last time I heard, Ross Johnstone was still alive, and living in Etobicoke, ON (I think on Larose Ave.). Lorne Carr passed away last year. Bill Ezinicki is living somewhere in MA, but as far as I know, he doesn't sign through the mail.
