Thought I'd raise a controversial question here, who do you think is the all time greatest signer IP/TTM or otherwise? State your picks and your reasons, I'll keep track of them on the first post. In no particular order I'd have to pick...

Henri Richard, quick to reply, nice clean signature, always sends extra signed items.

Bob Fillion, quick to reply, sends extra items and a signed note. still has a nice signature.

Elmer Lach, quick to reply, always sends extra items, still has a nice signature for his age.

Dickie Moore, quick to reply, sometimes sends extra items always sends a note, has nice legible signature.

Mr. Richard has always been a gracious signer for me. Marty McSorley, Johnny Bucyk, and Guy Lafleur as well.

best IP Paul Woods. signed 60+ cards while chatting with me about the wings and the first signature looked the same as the last one.

Bower is great, and I've had success with Bobby Clarke on a few occasions IP and TTM. He has a nice sig and, if you ask for a specific way for him to sign something, he follows through.
By the way, I had a success over the weekend with Don Cherry, it was my first with him, and he included a ton of extras, so it seems like he should go up there as well.

Lafleur
Murray Armstrong ( sent very nice letter & extras)

I have to go with Ted Lindsay. Just recieved 3 signed posters from the statue dedication give away in less than 2 weeks. He always takes his time signing and it's a great signature with the person's item in mind. He always says he owes the fan and you can tell.
I gave my daughter the middle name Lindsay after him 11 years ago and we ment him when she was 4 months old and I would take vactions in Detroit to see the Wings play and we met for lunch one afternoon in Windsor and had a great 2 hours and the man even picked up the check!
Never asks for money but I always send $10-$20 for his foundation as it's the least I can do.

lindsay won't sign doubles in the mail though. lafleur will sign 8 of the same card if you mail it.

sorry but jimmy mann is the biggest prick IP. "one only" is his favorite quote and you're lucky to get one.

Marty was great when I met him in person, he made sure that everyone that wanted something signed got it signed, he was great before and after the whole "stick to the head" deal. Phil Bourque and Chris Tamer were great in person too. Tamer liked the picture that I took of him playing for the Pens and asked if I could sent him a copy and I said sure and he asked for my address and sent back a sign game used stick.

I have to admit that the list is very accurate. My personal experience says that TTM, the following are not surpassed by anyone:
RED KELLY
JOHNNY BOWER
TED LINDSAY
Others are great too but these 3 men are the epitome of class.

IP, I have had great experiences with:
DOUG GILMOUR
WENDEL CLARK
JOHNNY BOWER (of course)

A side note:
My 2 worst experiences:
TOM BARRASSO (at least he signed)
MARK MESSIER (my alltime worst experience).

I only sent him one card for signing - maybe thats why he was in good mood .

GOOD
How about Bob "hound dog" Kelly. Got quick response with extra stuff for kids.

BAD
I agree that the worst has got to be Messier. Its as if he thinks everyone just wants to make a buck off him. He is not what he portrays on TV commercials.

Hey Guys

I would have to say Don Cherry. Signs and personalizes his cards and add extra freebies, has a beautiful signature with the pawprint. He gets extra points for being the busiest guy in all of Canada

The Espo's are bad signers. Tony will sign occasionally but Phil is a real fruit loop when it comes to signing autos. I guess he thinks his auto is as valuble as Bobby Orr's. Mark Recchi and Gary Roberts refuse to sign through the mail but I have seen them sign in person. Recchi usually has an attitude and Roberts has always been friendly.

Just to add to this great discussion:

I should mention that Monsieur Lafleur is also AWESOME. Thank you too to Don Cherry - agreed, he took the time to sign and send extras despite great demands on his time.

On the negative side, I have been anything but impressed by Gary Roberts (saw him refuse to sign in person - even kids - at a local arena).

TTM- (I don't want to add all the major star players or HOFer, but the grinders who enjoyed the fans, and signing graphs)

Can't forget Brian Propp. Signs your cards, and will throw in an extra item or two. Rick St. Croix, Bill Hajt, Mike Zuke, Pierre Larouche, Jack Gordon, Randy Velischeck, Dwight Bialowas, Murray Bannerman, Michel Dion, Bob Froese, Al Secord (even wrote back a nice note thanking me, answered all my questions, and even asked me a couple questions), Jim Nill, Allen Bester, Darcy Rota (added additional card, and post card)

IP- Bryan 'bugsy' Watson, Bob Nevin, Jim Pappin, Reed Larson, and Shane Doan,. The retired players were talkative about their careers, would add any inscription you asked to the item you were getting signed. Adam Graves was always good for a 'my dad isn't here, call me Adam' when you would ask "Mr. Graves" to please sign a card or photo. Harold Snepsts, signed anything and everything you handed him.

When did Gary Roberts become such a bad signer? He has always been accommodating (one or two items) when asked politely.

Best TTM, Dave Keon and Johnny Bower. Mr.Keon signed and personalized multiples, sent a nice note, and sent change from my postage money. Mr.Bower also signed and personalized multiples, and took some photos I sent him to the HHOF to help me identify some unknown players! Both of these guys epitomize class!

I should be ashamed for missing Brian Propp and Dave Keon - wonderful experiences for me as well TTM. I also have to say that Kirk Muller very much impressed me IP as well.

Just thought of this former North Star. Signed 4/4 8x10's and personalized one in less than a week c/o Mooseheads last winter. So far this year I've only sent out four requests. All came back within a couple of weeks. Glenn Hall, Ron Wicks(sent a nice hand written note), Doug Favell and Johnnny Bower.

You can add Teemu Selanne to the great signers TTM as I got him back for the 3rd time now. A surefire HOFer too.

Got to thinking one of the nicest guys I ever met was Garry Unger at a card show where the signing was free (whatever happened to those days).
I was getting his rookie card signed and he told me it was his head on Norm Ullman's body on the card front.
This guy should be in the HOF. He scored 8 straight years of 30 plus goals and let me tell you those were some awful Blues teams. I still remember when the Blues would play in Chicago Stadium and when he had the puck many Black Hawk fans would whistle. I remember some wiseguy behind Tony Esposito who would yell whooo when Esposito made a easy save. That was a hard crowd in those days!

Henri Richard is awesome, as is Ted Lindsay and Guy LaFleur. However, you just can't go wrong with Gordie Howe. Even if he doesn't sign your item, it's always a thrill to get a signed postcard from him.

I wrote to Howe twice, I was really polite and asked him if he could sign my card to me and both times I get the pay me and I will sign letter. Maybe he doesn't like people from Pittsburgh. =]
