For those regulars on this board, you may be aware that over a year ago I began my pursuit of completing the 1987-88 OPC set autographed. It has been a lot of fun and very challenging. As of this morning, I was finally down to only three cards; Denis Potvin, Peter Zezel and Pat Flatley. This morning, I went in-person to the Flordia Panthers hotel to attempt to get Denis Potvin who is the teams television guy. I also have a mutual friend of Peter Zezel who had arranged for me to get the Zezel card done in a few weeks. The only question mark was Flatley. I had mailed unsuccessfully to his home multiple times. I even mailed to the NHL Alumni assocation with the $10 the request and I never heard anything back. I was basically out of answers and didn't know how I would get him. Today thank god, I got the Denis Potvin and I was thrilled. But my joy turned into a nightmare about ten minutes later when Pat Flatley walked right by me on the sidewalk! I couldn't believe my luck because I didn't have the card on me! I did however approach him and told him what I had been through and he gave me his new home address. What are the odds? Learn from my mistakes. Always come prepared even if you think it's impossible!!!!! It was a bitter-sweet day.

I learned a similar lesson this past summer at Rogers Centre... working on my All-time Expos project. It's tough to swallow, I know.

but you got Potvin, you got the new addy, and you have things arranged for Zezel... looks like the nightmare is almost over. So congratz for that.

Huddy222,
congrats on the success of your project. Hopefully Flatley will come through. I thought that Zezel was a very good signer ttm?

Zezel is a very good sigher ttm, but I just wanted to get him in-person and snap a photo of us together as he signs the last card.

Congrats Huddy... How is Potvin in person? Did you ever try him thru Panthers? I'm gonna give him a shot anyways.

Great job, Huddy!!! How many signed cards in that set? How many cards have multiple sigs on them? Hopefully all the pieces will fall into place for you.

Wow, that's alot of work for a 20+ yr old set. Nice job. You're going to post the Flatley address after you get your return, right? :)

Denis Potvin is decent in-person, not great but he will do one each if you can get to him. I haven't heard of any mail success with him. The set has 264 cards minus the two checklists its 262 signed cards total. No multi-player cards. I've been an in-person hound for over ten years and have always favored that set when getting autographs. Last year, when I finally counted what I had, I was alreay at 150 signed cards so I decided to try and get the last 112 and try to finish it off.

I agree w/ Hamilton. I'd be interested to read some of the IP (or mail) encounters re: that set.

Great work!

I have the info, I've maintained a blog and a mail database. Maybe I should publish it somewhere if people find it interesting.

I'm collecting 88/89 OPC and I'd love to get a gander at your database since there are probably hundreds of the same players in the two sets.
