Not really a card collector but thought someone here might be able to help . . .
I've been trying to complete a 1995 Signature Rookies Miracle on Ice autographed set, but am missing the Herb Brooks auto'd card. For the first time, one is being offered on eBay, but there's a catch. )
The set had two types of cards - the regular card, numbered "1 of 24,000" and an insert, autographed card, numbered serially out of 2,000, so the card might read "364 of 2,000." The actually number was in handwriting, while the "2,000" was printed as part of the card printing process.

What's odd about the one up for sale on eBay is that it does show "of 2,000," but it has no particular number, as the seller apparently notes. So, instead of saying "364 [in handwriting] of 2,000" it just says "of 2,000," making me wonder whether the card is a reprint or was from stock that was never intended to be distributed and that perhaps the signature is forged. The card isn't cheap, so I'm evaluating the risk . . . . Thanks much for your help.

Ok, I´m not sure about this but here´s 2 possible scenarios to explain this card:

Usually manufactures print a certain number of extra copies of short printed cards that are not distributed. This was initially done to be able to replace them, in case customers received damaged boxes/packs and sent in the original cards to be replaced. They would then write the matching serial number on one of the replacements and send them out. Usually you would expect those extra copies to be discarted after a certain time, though. Maybe this is one of them that was somehow obtained on the aftermarket when the manufacturer folded?

On the other hand I´m not sure how those "miracle on ice" ones were distributed. Were the cards inserted or was it a redemtion programm? I remember I had a redemtion card from a signature rookie 4-sport product that had to be sent in first to get the real card. If that was the case here it may very well be possible that they had the cards unnumbered and would then number them in order of received redemtion cards. Meaning if not all redemtion cards have been sent in before the the programm expired or the company folded again there could have been a number of unnumbered cards in company´s archives that somehow became available after it folded. (There´s still plenty of unopened boxes around to this day so this may very well be possible)

I am not going to pretend to sound like an expert. I have the entire set of auto cards. The set that I have was purchased as a complete set and is hand written "promo" and printed "of 2,000". In addition, in the lower right hand corner of every card is a hand written 6/300. I think that I have seen the card that you are talking about and it does not look like any other Miracle on Ice auto that I have seen. I am not saying that it isn't authentic but I personally would be skeptical. I hope that this helps.
