The goal Pavel Bure scored a few years ago in exhibition play with the Canucks (where he used his skate to pass back to his stick)was one of the prettiest goals I have seen. Was not important, but great nonetheless.

I think that Bobby Orr's game winning goal in the 1970 final Versus St.Louis is one of the most overrated moments of all time. Lets be real the Bruins were going to win the Cup that year no matter what happened in game four of that series. They were SO much better than the Blues and if I remember correctly they handled them easily in the first three games of the series. This wasn't life or death. Secondly Orr was tripped AFTER he had already shot the puck into the net. Some people seem to think he was airborne as he shot the puck but this fact is clear on any replay. Third what makes the goal memorable is the fact that it was scored by BOBBY ORR. If it had been Ed Westfall or Dallas Smith who made that play no one would even remember it today with the exception of Boston fans. Don't get me wrong here I think Orr was the best player ever and his status would be secure even without the GOAL. I just think people should keep things in perspective. I would offer a couple of goals that weren't mentioned. Bill Barilko's cup winner in 1951 and Darryl Sittler' 1976 Canada Cup winner.

I`d like to re-mention one, how about Bobby Baun`s 1964 game six overtime goal.
Leafs down 3-2 in the series to the Red Wings, and in game six Bobby broke his leg in the 3rd period, Bobby was helped off the ice. He told the doctor to tape it up becuase he was going back out, he did in overtime and scored the ot winner, Toronto won game seven and the 1964 Championship.

Valeri Kamensky scored during the playoffs one year when he was with Colorado. He was cutting infront of the goalie, when someone let one go from the point. He was jumping from backwards to forwards at the exact moment the shot was coming, and he deflected it bewteen his legs into the net.

(1) In a Exhibition, Pavel Bure going behind the net fliping the puck over the net going in front and scoring, that was a great goal
(2) Mario Lemieux's 1st NHL goal, steels the puck off Ray Bourque makes the goalie looks stupid and slids it home, beauty
(3) Bobby Orr going End to End against the St. Louis Blues
(4) Doug Gimour 1993 Stanley Cup Playoffs, great moves, Joseph didn't know what was happening
(5) 1st Round of the 2002 Playoffs, Detroit vs. Vancouver, Markus Naslund with a Wrist Shot from the blueline just over the shoulder of Dominik Hasek, one of the greatest goals i have saw
(6) Steve Thomas gets his NHL leading 11th OT Winner as a member of the Leafs scoring on Felix Potvin with 2 seconsd left in OT. Took the puck from his end went throught everyone and put it 5 hole on "the Cat"
(7) Brain Gionta, in the minors, took the puck off the D went by both off them pulled a move on the goalie he went down, Gionta stopped went back the other way and put it top self

Wayne Gretzky's slapshot over Mike Vernon's shoulder in the '88 division finals. I think that won the series, and it is one of those lasting moments from his career that alot of his early fans remember. And I could watch videos of Gretz and Kurri on 2- on- 1 breakouts all day long. Does anyone know where the Rocket's goal on "Sugar" Jim Henry from the '52 semi final (the one with the bloody face) may be found on video?

-Bobby Orr's game winner
-Matteau's game winner
-I wasn't alive to see it, but the guy with the broken leg that scored shows nothing but heart and skill
-Owen Nolan's hat trick goal in '97 All-Star game in front of the home crowd after showing Hasek where he was going and putting it there
-Owen Nolan had a really sweet goal a couple of seasons ago. Wasn't a game winner and had no real significance, but he deked his way through all five of the opposing players, the rips a backhand up into the top corner from 20 ft. out! He didn't just make the goalie look stupid, he made all six opposing players look stupid.
If you didn't notice, I'm a bit of an Owen Nolan fan. These are in no particular order, and I haven't been alive long enough to make an educated decision on the top 5 all time, but these are five of the better goals I've had a chance to see live or on replay.

I saw this really cool Doug Weight goal against the Flames. He crossed the blue line and lifted his stick over the D-Man (Jamie Allison) as the puck went between Allison's legs then regained control and started skating backwards to the net and scored. If you have the game NHL 99 (EA Sports) then it shows it. It is a really good goal and it isn't just because my favorite player is Doug Weight. On NHL 98 it shows that Owen Nolen goal in the All-Star game. Thats an awsome one to.

1. Hawerchuck wins face-off back to Larry Murphy Up to Gretzky over to Lemieux and in the net. From their own end to the other teams net within 10 seconds.
2. I would hate to break it to the guy in the first page but... It matters not how important the moment is to make a great looking goal. Bobby Orr deeked out the entire St Louis team passed the puck back to Derek Sanderson who passed it back to Bobby in front of the net and was tripped while scoring. Great goal!!!
3. Lemieux embarrassing Bourque in the '91 playoffs.
4. Pick any goal where Gretzky passed the puck over to Kurri and he scorred. Kurri would have been a nobody without Gretzky.
5. Bobby Baun's overtime goal on a broken leg to win the Leafs the Cup.

1. Pavel Bure's break-away double OT goal vs. the Flames in game 7 of the 1994 Playoffs
2. Pavel Bure's near back-to-back-to-back Hat Tricks with the Panthers
3. Tony Amonte's tie-breaking goal in the 1996 World cup of Hockey against Team Canada
4. Adam Deadmarsh scores in OT to defeat the Red Wings in the "Phenom on Figeuroa(SP?)" in the greatest playoff comeback of all time to send the Kings to game 6.
5. Mark Messier guarenteeing a hat trick and a victory...and doing exactly that.
Honorable mentions:
though not technically a goal....Pavel Bure, during the 94 Playoff series, in which I think was against Dallas, goes behind the net, flips the puck in the air, then skates around the front net and bats the puck out of mid-air nearly scoring.
The "michigan" goal
Jaromir Jagr's between-the-legs goal
Valeri Kharlamov making the NHL's best defensement look like girls stuck in the mud with every dazzeling goal he scored
Cam Neely does a 180 backhand spin with a rolling puck
Any goal Pavel Bure scored

Everyone seems to mention Bobby Orr's "midair" goal and how great it was, when in actuality he shot before he was tripped. The real winner for a midair goal should go to Mike Bossy. He shot the puck while in midair to put the Islanders up 3-0 against Vancouver in the 1982 Stanley Cup finals. They went to win the cup for the 3rd of 4 straight times and in my eyes is one of the greatest goals.

Does anyone remember Gretzky scoring off a faceoff against the St. Louis Blues from the left circle with like a second left to play in the game? He was with Edmonton at the time. I don't think the puck ever hit the ice, went from the ref's hand, to Gretzky's stick to the back of the net. I feel like I must have dreamed this -- who does something like that? -- but it is vivid in my memory. Can't find it on the Web, though. Tell me I'm not crazy.

-i know i forgot alot- so show me the money
1. Paul Henderson's Game 8 Summit Series winner with 34 seconds left in the game. Should be acclaimed as the most important goal ever scored in hockey. It is what it is.
2. Lemieux from Gretzky to win the Canada Cup in 1987. Canada had lost the previous Canada Cup and several other series', and looked like they had been overcome as the #1 hockey power in the World. It was what made all of us realize that we were not the runaway leader any more - but that as long as we played the game here in Canada with our passion - we would always be one of the favourites - year in and year out.
3. Bobby Orr's goal - and being sent soaring through the air from a Noel Picard trip. At the time - it put the game of hockey on the front page of the big US newspapers. The NHL had lost their National TV contract just before that, and there was a lot of disinterest in the League in both the US and Canada at the time. The overall attitude had become one of there being too many teams - and too many players, People could not seem to adapt to becoming familiarized with all of the new names. It put the game back on the front pages and became one of the most recognized hockey photos ever taken - maybe the most recognized.
4. Peter Forsberg's Swedish postal stamp goal. It marked hockey's arrivaal as becoming a "World" game. No longer was it just Canada, or just Canada and the USSR. It was the defining moment when it became clear that several nations were vying for the number one seed in the rankings - and any team could win the Olympic Gold in any year. Never has the factor of getting the early goal - getting a fortunate bounce - or playing a disciplined style of play been more important. Most of all, never has it been more important to realize that we needed to incorporate the European methods of playing a team oriented defensive game - as well as our goalies needing to take away the bottom half of the net - and needing to be prepared for the European rules - including going to the shoot-out after a scoreless overtime - which is how Forsberg scored the famous one-handed goal.
5. Wayne Gretzky's goal while playing for the 1978 Team Canada Jrs. as a 16 year old. Without having the blazing speed to go around the D to the outside - or having the brawn to bull his way through like Bobby Hull, Gretzky deftly picks up the puck - slams on the brakes - sidesteps a sliding D-man - fakes outside - then inside - and walks around the second Russian D-man - simply bee-lines for the goalie - fakes him out of his skates - and shoves it into the empty net. At the time, it was everything - and more - than what Ovechkin, Crosby, Lemieux or Jagr have ever done since in the breathtaking department.
It meant much more, though. It turned what had been an insignificant and unwatched tournament (up until that time) and in one game - and with one goal - turned it into the one most anticipated yearly hockey event to Canadians - outside of the Stanley Cup. The goal is on YouTube - but not of the best quality. All of the other players in the game were either 19 or 20. Simply amazing the numbers that Gretzky put up in the clutch and grab days of the NHL.

I disagree about Gretzky's goal. Not that it wasn't pretty but it had nothing to do with the popularity of the tourney. It didn't even make it on to TV until the late 80's. Canada won in 82 and had players like Lemieux, Yzerman, Vernon and Andreychuk in 83 and you could hardly even find out the scores of games.
And those weren't the clutch and grab days. That didn't happen til 90's expansion.

Any of the Bobby Hull goals where he goes coast to coast with at least one or two of the opposition hanging off him. Also that Bobby Orr goal where he kills about a minute of a penalty by skating between centre and his net about three times before skating thru the whole opposition before depositing the puck in the net.

I would have to agree with the Paul Henderson goal simply because there is no single play in Canadian sport that has a greater social significance. You don't have to be a hockey fan to know of that goal.
In terms of of TV moment, the Bobby Orr scoring and soaring has to be it, simply because it is such a beautiful and simple representation of the best of the sport, what we all love about it.
In terms of artistic impression, some of the recent goals by Alex Ovechkin have got to get mention, because they are so far and away prettier than anything I've ever seen, regardless of how important they were
