I always wondered when has this terrific tradition started! It seems to be around as long as the playoff beard!!

total hockey thinks it goes back to canada's tie to great britain,
in almost all sports there is a post game handshake.
and because many canadiens in late 1800's when stanley cup was awarded many were british immigrants and custom transferred to hockey.
