go try out that link it tells history and all about masks. it might tel the first to use a cage at the bottom. i just skimmed over it though. hope it helps a little.

I remember Tony Esposito wearing a partial cage over his fiberglass mask, just over the eye area in the early 1980's.

Jacque Plante and it was in 1959.

The first cage mask was created by Dave Dryden in 1980. It kind of phased in with a whole bunch of goaltenders.
