Please, tell me-were or are in NHL and in international hochey the wingers and defenders those often came up to a face-off spot during face-off procedure ? Almost always I see centres at a face-off spot, but can not remember the wingers and defenders at one.

Why exactly the centres are at a face-off spot ?

taking faceoffs is a job inherent to being a center. if a defenseman were to take one he would not be able perform his other roles in the faceoff procedure (like guarding the crease or blocking a shot, or shooting from the point) or in the ensuing play because he would be significantly out of position. the center would have to take the defenseman's spot and switch with him after the faceoff. that would take too much time and cause too much scrambling. wingers who have the ability will often take faceoffs because it is easy to get back into position. gary roberts, keith tkachuk, dave andreychuk, kirk maltby, mark recchi, and adam graves are all wingers who can effectively take faceoffs.

there was one all-time great defenseman turned center who could definitely take faceoffs and that was hall-of-famer red kelly.
