I heard a rumor that all of the captains from wining Stanley Cup Teams are Canadian except one.
The lone exception being M. Modano, Dallas 1999.
Can anyone help me by confirming the team captains back to, say 1990?
Here is a start:
1990, Edm, Messier
1991, Pit, Lemieux
1992, Pit, Lemieux
1993, Mtl, Muller or Keane?
1994, NYR, Messier
1995, NJ, Stevens? MacLean?
1996, Col, Sakic
1997, Det, Yzerman
1998, Det, Yzerman
1999, Dal, Modano
2000, NJ, Stevens?
2001, Col, Sakic
2002, Det, Yzerman
2003, NJ, Stevens?
2004, TB, Andreychuk

Your correct on most
1993 Canadiens = Guy Carbeaneau
1995 Devils = Scott Stevens
Stevens was captain of all 3 Devils teams.
I believe that all the Captains beyond 1990 were Canadians too.

Thank you for the confirmation
Here is something else that is fascinating.
Only 2 non-canadians won the conn-smythe?
I think...
1994 - B. Leetch
2002 - N. Lidstrom

The last all-canadian team to win Stanley Cup...
1974-75 Philadelphia Flyers.

The captain of the 1999 Dallas Stars was Darian Hatcher not Mike Modano. Mike was named captain just after Hatcher was traded to Detroit.

Of course habnadien ! I'm surprised nobody else caught that one.
Does this mean, then, that all of the SCC captains were children of the maple leaf ?

what I mean ed, is that if the Canadian Captain string is for real, then we can eliminate any team with a Non-Canadian Captain for next year.

After looking through it. There are 3 Cup Champ Captains not born in Canada.
1933-34 Blackhawks, Charlie Gardiner, born in Scotland
1937-38 Blackhawks, John Gottselig, born in Russia
1998-99 Stars, Derian Hatcher, born in Michigan
I have checked every winning team from 1936 to now. Teams previous are more difficult.

It's possible Modano captained a few road games during the season, but I don't think he wore the "C" in the playoffs. Also, after the infamous Brett Hull "winner", Hatcher accepted the Cup on behalf of the Stars - not Modano.

Modano wasnt captain neither was hatcher in the last round of those playoffs. It was Nieuwendyk who wore the C as hatcher was injured
