Hey everyone,i'm a newbie to this site and in need of some advice regarding a medical question i guess.Any help will be much appreciated so thanx in advance.Ok,here's the situation,i'm fairly clueless to the exact ins and outs ov hockey,i can watch it and enjoy it quite happily with out having to know the rulebook like the back of my hand, however my girlfriends nephew is very much so into his hockey,he's only 11 but has been playing for years and is part of a team,he enjoys it emmensly but recently has been questioning his abillity to play in the future, not becasue of skill or determination or even dedication to the sport, its a medical worry, eyesight to be exact, unfortunalty he doesnt have full vision out of one eye and has been almost written off before he has a chance to try out.Is this the case?Do you have to pass an eye exam?I have been posting around a few different sites but havnt had any response, thought i'd try here, anyone got any ideas, thoughts, views,i need some help as im not clued up on this sport, cheers everyone.ROB

Not in minor hockey, there are kids that are deaf and cannot hear the whistle. I guess it all depends. If it is a hitting league he might get hurt by not seeing the opposing player coming at him

bryan berard of blackhawks got a stick in the eye when he played with toronto that was going to end his career. he only had 20/600
vision and nhl required at least 20/400 so he got a special contact lens and he was cleared to play and he wears a visor.
kids usually wear a full cage but diferent leagues have rules on players with certain vision.

I see you're from England, and since that is a less hockey-crazed nation, I doubt the restrictions would be as high if it was soccer. Anyway, if he's playing just for fun, it shouldn't matter that much, unless of course, he isn't having fun.

Yep u guessed right im from england, however my girlfriends nephew isn't,he's currently situated in canada and plays there.PLaying for fun and having fun whilst playing is two different things isnt it?Yes he plays for fun,yes he has fun playing but he also takes his hockey very seriously and is coming to an age where he should really graduate into a different league,a contact league if i remember right,we've had mixed replies so im doing a little polishing up on my rules and regs. Thanks for all the replies,ROB.

20/400 is legally blind right?
