Diid anyone make the pro hockey centennial this past weekend it was awesome.
Houghton Michigan is the BIRTHPLACE OF PRO HOCKEY with the portage lakes hockey team started in 1904 by James Dee a dentist in houghton at the time and he recruited players from canada to be the FIRST to be payed to play hockey. He recruited many future hall of famers to play for this team, Cyclone Taylor, Riley Hearn, Bruce and Hod Staurt, Newsy Lalonde, and Didler Pitre are all players who played for Portage lake and calumet teams from 1904 to 1907.
The celebration was awesome with a hockey expo at the dee stadium with many displays of hockey history. The us and canada hockey hall of fame had jerseys and sticks on display. Gordie Howe was present for a couple days and signed his book. The Stanley cup was here on sunday and displayed for 7 hours for locals to see. Also there was a hockey game on saturday as the mtu huskies alumni played the detroit red wing alumni. The three oldest cups were on display all weekend stanley cup, mcgnauten cup and gibson cup, check out this website for more information on this historcial event
