I'm the sports columnist with the Vancouver Courier newspaper in Vancouver, B.C. I'm working on a story about the impacts of the NHL lockout. I'm canvassing fans to find out how they're spending their spare time (and money) since there are no NHL games to attend or watch at this time. Any and all information is welcome. (For example, are there any hockey pools that are based on AHL or major junior games?)
I look forward to replies.
Cheers,
Bob Mackin

This lockout sucks. I was hoping to get to all the Montreal vs Toronto games (even the ones in Toronto) now, I'll have to watch the Toronto Raptors.

I find it somewhat comforting to cruise www.eurohockey.com and keep up with all the NHLers who sign in europe. Another poor substitute for NHL action is EA's NHL 2004 (2005 coming soon!), it has the Elitserien, SM-Liiga and DEL teams so some of the euro signings can be simulated. I would have liked to catch a couple OSHL games before Decembre, but it doesn't seem like the upstart league is doing very well. Of course, the lockout would be much more bearable if there was actually an end in sight, but at the rate we're going, it looks like it's going to be a year at least before the players hit NHL ice again. As any good fan will tell you, though, all these quick fixes pale in comparison to the real thing. Hope this helps, good luck with your article.

World Series, NFL, CFL(Playoffs coming up), NASCAR. Feeding off of the other sports. But, unfortunately the first of those is coming to an end soon, and two others in a month.

When it comes to January and February I really don't know. It'll get worse as the days and months go by.

I'm not. Every second of this lockout is suckier than the previous. However, working 30 hours a week and going to school full time does help keep my mind off of it.

I must agree with lynn. Thanks for the AHL and NCAA being on the FSN networks so at least there is some hockey to watch. GO Gophers!!!

Gotta love those high scoring games. Too bad you don't see those in the NHL very often. The last game I can remember with a similar score was at least a year or two ago when Anaheim beat Detroit 8-6 at the Pond.

After watching the beloved Red Sox win the series, only this weekend has it hit me that we have no hockey. This weekend I watched every hockey video and DVD that I own. On what would have been opening night, I read a couple of older hockey books from my collection. Now I'll probably start working on some projects for my hockey memorabilia room.

At first I watched baseball, then when that finished I watched football, but since thats only on weekends now i'm surviving by wathcing the Toronto Raptors, but when they go back to being bad there won't be anything to watch. I also play alot of video games and stuff. There's also minor hockey but its not as good as the NHL.

Hope this helped.

You think Philadelphia is bad, try looking at the price of Ranger and Knick tickets. It's outrageous.

We are lucky enough in Chicago to have the Wolves in the AHL. Tickets cost much less, don't have to mess around with downtown traffic, and they WIN! There is a great rivalry with the Milwaukee Admirals who are only an hour's drive away. I also got to see a Russian Super League game when I was in Moscow last month. That league, right now, is probably as good or better than the NHL becouse of less teams and all the best players there now. It would be great if those games were telivised here in the states.
