I'll throw out my own cliche, "You've got to break some eggs to make an omelete". I've got the Prelim Roster Photo, and the celebration photo with 16 graphs, which I had started on earlier. I sent them out together when I got Johnson, Christoff, Schneider and Ramsey.
I've probably got about 20 team photos in both hockey and baseball I've done this with. Sometimes I'll send a letter to a player before hand asking permission to send my photo. I figure if I don't get the letter back, and I wont send the item.
I got burned once when I sent out a photo of the 1960 NFL Champion Eagles with 11 autos and never got it back. The lump in my throat now comes from two photos, 84-85 and 86-87 Flyers team photos, each with 7 or 8 graphs. I emailed Derrick Smith in April asking if he'd sign them and he quickly replied that he would. Well, I mailed them out and am still waiting. I tried emailing him a couple of times in July to see if he got them, and never heard back. One of these days....

I once had a card of McSorley and Fleury for my 91-92 Score set.
Had McSorley on it and needed Fleury.
A show promotor was having him and I was scared to send it. Just had one graph on it but was still leary of TTMing it.
Did it and got it back no problem though.

Got a great return today! Jaromir Jagr signed my 91 Pinnacle, my 02 Topps Heritage, and included a signed Omsk card as well. It was postmarked from the Czech Republic on September 9th. He must have drop it off in the mail, then hopped on a plane that landed about 20 miles from my house since he's in camp with the Flyers now.

just got mine back from jagr yesterday

2 straight days of great returns for my 02-03 Topps Heritage set as my Joe Thornton came back today. I had sent it c/o the Sharks in April!

Got back a couple for my 91 Pinnacle set:
Tom Chorske 1/1 in a week
Steve Larmer 2/2 after about 1 month

2 back in the last few days. Riley Cote signed a photo puck c/o The Phantoms. Also, I got Erik Rasmussen back on an 02-03 Topps Heritage after only a week!

I got 3/3 back from Rick Zombo after about 2 months.
