I sent Scott a Devils puck and a silver paint pen one week ago. Yesterday in the mail it came back signed and personalized. So cool and generous of Scott. Sent it to his home.
Michael's art supplies has them for like $2.25 for two
Rangers puck, personalized and added nice note to my letter only one week!
Could you please post the address you used for Richter? Thanx.

I think that sending a puck probably got his attention first vs. a card.
Good luck!
My preference for hockey pucks is to use a metallic silver paint pen (I like the sharpness of the auto it produces). It's been a while since I sent a puck ttm, but when I did I always sent the puck in a puck square and I would tape a small piece of cardboard to the the logo on the center of the puck. this would ensure two things: first, when they would put the cover back on, even if they would press real hard it wouldn't smudge the signature, and second, that they would sign in the black space around the logo.
As the others have mentioned I would rarely get the pen back, but this is something I expect and a small price to pay for some of the awesome pucks I got back.
