The Southern California Hockey League was founded as a junior hockey league in 1959. It played as this format until 1963, and then went dormant for a season. It attempted to re-form in 1964 as a junior league, but decided that there were not enough good junior players, so instead formed under the Intermediate Open category of US amateur hockey, a category which was semi-professional in nature. Prior to 1964 it had referred to itself as the Southern California Junior Hockey League. Many of the players in 1966-67 were noted as being from Canada and ranged from age 18 to 47.
