American Junior Hockey League history and statistics

AmJHL History

The American Junior Hockey League was a junior hockey league based in the United States. It was formed in the summer of 1977 with the vice-president of the professional American Hockey League, Gordon Anziano, as president. Anziano served as the president of the American Junior Hockey League simultaneously with his service in the AHL. The league was described as an outgrowth of the U.S. League which operated in New England the previous season.

The league started its inaugural 1977-78 season with six franchises: Mass-Conn Twins, based in Enfield CT; Framingham Pics, South Shore Clippers (based on Cohasset MA); Assabet Valley Tomahawks (based in West Concord MA); Beverly Flyers, and the Western Mass Pioneers (based in Chicopee MA); The Maine Junior Nordiques (based in Lewiston ME) entered the league right as the schedule opened, due to the demise of the professional Maine Nordiques of the NAHL in September.
