The United States Hockey League was a semi-professional hockey league that operated in the midwestern United States from 1947 to 1979. The league changed its name many times, staring out as the American Amateur Hockey League, finally settling on United States Hockey League starting in 1961-62. The USHL played under the auspices of the Amateur Hockey Association of the USA, however the teams were considered to be professional teams, with the players being paid.
The 1957-58 season featured games played at several midwestern arenas in order to gauge their potential future entry into the league. The most games were played in Lincoln, Nebraska, in the Lincoln Pershing Municipal Auditorium. Barnstorming games were also played in Sioux City and Des Moines. Although Minneapolis fielded two teams (the Bungalows and the Culbertsons), only 11 games were played in that city. The Rochester Mustangs were the only team to play a true home schedule, with games held at the Rochester Mayo Civ... [Click for more]ic Auditorium. The following season, the Culbertson team was said to represent both Minneapolis and Lincoln, and Des Moines entered a team, presumably satisfied with their trial.
The USHL eventually merged with the Midwest Junior Hockey League and within a few years, became an exclusively junior hockey league.
