Usage Terms

Access to hockeydb.com by a web crawler or 'bot with the purpose of capturing the content is expressly prohibited. Proceed with caution. If we detect site crawling, the machine you access from may be permanently denied access.

Facts cannot be copyrighted. There is even some question if large compilations of information like this database can be copyrighted. I ask people to treat this site with some respect and intelligence. Please feel free to use information here, but don't use it in a way that competes with this site.

That said, copying large portions of hockeydb.com to provide a service that directly competes with hockeydb.com is prohibited under unfair competition misappriation tort law. The law establishes three tests:

  1. Has the plaintiff made a substantial investment (time, money, effort) in the product being copied? [for the record, I have spent over ten years and over $100,000 compiling the information on hockeydb.com -- so I'd say this is substantial.]
  2. Has the defendant approrpriated the property at little or no cost? [writing a script to "download" hockeydb.com would likely qualify]
  3. Is the defendent's use of the property directly affecting the plaintiff, either by diverting profits or making the plaintiff's product less desirable? [setting up a similar site, even if non-profit, or releasing the data into the "public domain" would qualify].

I simply ask that you be smart. Don't take too much. Don't compete with me. Don't do something that will put me out of business. If you use the information here, give me credit. Don't try to pass this information as your own work. If you use a good amount of information, please link back to this site.

A good usage of the information here would be to trace the history of the old AHA. A bad usage of the information here would be setting up a site that archives NHL logos.

If you want to post someone's career stats, don't even bother asking -- I'll always say yes to something as trivial as that. Mention the site if it's appropriate.

And so I'm not a hypocrite, realize that I have used thousands of sources to compile this site; take a look at where I got my information on the credits page.

Regarding hockey logos, you may think that since a logo was never copyrighted, and since it is in the public domain, you can take the image file presented on this site and use it however you want. This is wrong. My scans of these logos are a derivative work since they are transforming the logos into another medium. These image files are protected by copyright law even though the original logo is in the public domain. Although you are free to copy the logo from an original source, you are not free to copy my image files.

I suggest you read this article before freely copying and distributing the logos I have assembled.
