Spokane Clippers Statistics and History
The Spokane Clippers, a minor professional hockey team located in Spokane, WA, competed in the Pacific Coast Hockey League. Originally established as the Spokane Indians during the 1936-37 season, they relocated to Oakland prior to the start of that season and adopted the name Oakland Clippers. Towards the end of the 1936-37 season, the team departed Oakland, presumably heading back to Spokane. However, they only played three games in Spokane before finishing their remaining regular season and playoff games on the road. The Clippers eventually made a complete move to Spokane for the 1937-38 season.
In November 1938, Arthur C. Rud, the Tacoma-based owner of the Clippers, expressed his intention to sell the team to local owners in Spokane due to poor attendance. Despite some interest, the response was lukewarm, leading Rud to announce the team's folding. On November 21, he declared that the Clippers were no longer affiliated with the PCHL. This posed a problem for the league, which only had four teams at the time. Speculation arose about the team potentially relocating to New Westminster. However, after a one-week hiatus, Rud relinquished control of the team to the players themselves. The players agreed to a 50% pay reduction and implemented cost-cutting measures by traveling via car instead of train. Rud maintained ownership on paper, and the Spokane Athletic Round Table, a group of sports enthusiasts, provided some financial support to the team.
In early December, Rud finally sold the club to two Spokane men, Roy Hotchkiss and H.R. Gilkey, partners in an automobile accessory dealership. The team played out the season, and disbanded.
